MINNEAPOLIS — The series finale between the Seattle Mariners and the Minnesota Twins was postponed Sunday because of wintry weather.
With snow in the forecast and game-time temperatures expected to hover around freezing, the game was called off about three hours before first pitch. It was rescheduled for May 14, which had been an off day for both teams. The Mariners had not been scheduled to return to Minnesota this season.
The two teams played through the coldest outdoor Twins’ game in Minnesota history Saturday when the first pitch was thrown in 27-degree weather. Seattle beat Minnesota 11-4.
“It was freezing,” Mariners outfielder Dee Gordon said after the contest.
Sunday’s postponement means the Mariners won’t need to call on a fifth starter this week.
The original plan was to recall Ariel Miranda from Class A Modesto to start on Wednesday, but now it appears the Mariners will be able to go a few more weeks without a fifth starter. And that means Erasmo Ramirez could be ready to go by the time they do need one, which might not be until April 15.
Left-hander Marco Gonzales is expected to start the series opener Monday in Kansas City, followed by Felix Hernandez on Tuesday and James Paxton on Wednesday. The Mariners have an off day Thursday. Mike Leake, who started Saturday’s win in Minnesota, is scheduled to pitch Friday at home against Oakland.
“I’ll talk to Mel (Stottlemyre Jr.) about how that lines up,” Servais said. “It plays into where Erasmo is at and getting him stretched out. Not quite sure where we’re going to go with that.”
Healy on crutches
Mariners first baseman Ryon Healy was wearing a boot on his ankle and needed crutches to move about after spraining his ankle during a post-game workout following the Mariners’ win Saturday.
Healy ended a 1-for-21 skid in the game with a three-run double.
“Right after the game yesterday I talked with Ryon. He got a big hit and he felt better about some things,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “He went into the weight room to work out. I don’t have all the details on it but he twisted his ankle pretty bad doing nothing more than just some plyometric, back and forth.
“I don’t know how severe it is yet but I did get the report that he was on crutches.”
The Mariners do have first baseman Daniel Vogelbach on the roster, and utility players Andrew Romine and Taylor Motter can play first, as well.
Sims joins injured list
The rash of injuries suffered by the Mariners this season now extends to the broadcast booth.
Root Sports play-by-play anchor Dave Sims recounted during the Mariners-Twins broadcast on Saturday that he tore his Achilles tendon playing basketball with fellow broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith, Servais and others.
Sims will need surgery.
