Outfielder Leonys Martin is remaining with the Mariners and returning to Triple-A Tacoma.
Martin, 29, accepted an outright assignment Friday to the Rainiers after clearing waivers. He was designated for assignment on Aug. 23 after batting .230 in 19 games following a July 30 return to the big leagues.
Manager Scott Servais previously indicated Martin, if he remained in the organization, would likely return to the Mariners in September once rosters are permitted to expand to 40 players.
This marks the second time this season that Martin cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment after being removed from the club’s 40-man roster. He was previously designated April 23 for assignment after going 6-for-54 in 15 games.
Martin’s previous tour at Tacoma was a success: He batted .312 with a .352 on-base percentage in 84 games while hitting 11 homers and driving in 39 runs. He also stole 24 bases in 29 attempts.
The Rainiers have just 11 games remaining in their season.
Martin could have become a free agent by refusing the outright assignment but, in doing so, would have forfeited the remainder of his $4.85 million guaranteed salary.
