Second baseman Dustin Ackley missed his fourth straight game today because of the sprained left ring finger he suffered last week, but four others from the Mariners’ organization played key roles in the Peoria Javelinas’ 4-2 Arizona Fall League victory at Mesa.
Third baseman Matt Lawson’s RBI ground out in the ninth inning drove home Nate Tenbrink to tie the score 2-2, and the Javelinas won with two runs in the top of the 10th.
Tenbrink, who started at third but moved to left field when Lawson entered the game in the fifth inning, had his best game so far in the Fall League. He went 3-for-4 with a double, one run and a walk, bumping his fall average to .263 in five games.
Right-hander Tom Wilhelmsen starred in relief, pitching two perfect innings to finish the game and striking out four of the six hitters he faced. He has allowed two hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts in four Fall League innings.
Right-hander Josh Fields also continued his strong work after missing much of the season with Class AA West Tennessee because of a sore forearm. He allowed one hit in the fifth inning, giving him two scoreless innings for the Javelinas.
As for Ackley, he hasn’t played since taking a line drive off a finger of his glove hand on Thursday. X-rays last week were negative and Pedro Grifol, the Mariners’ minor league director, said Ackley is improving. “He’ll get in there in a couple of days,” Grifol said.
