SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners placed struggling starter Carlos Silva on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with right shoulder inflammation.
The club also activated closer Brandon Morrow from the 15-day disabled list before its game against the Minnesota Twins.
The 30-year-old Silva is 1-3 with an 8.48 ERA in six starts in the second year of a $48 million, four-year contract with the Mariners. He has not been able to make it through the fourth inning his past two starts.
“Last time it looked like he was really favoring it,” Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said. Silva’s previous start against Kansas City resulted in six runs on eight hits in three innings.
Last year, Silva was 4-15 with a 6.46 ERA in 28 starts.
The move was retroactive to Thursday, meaning Silva will be eligible to come off the DL on May 22.
Left-hander Jason Vargas was moved from the bullpen to the rotation to take Silva’s place. Vargas will start on Tuesday against Texas.
“It’s definitely a good feeling,” Vargas said. “But at the same time, I don’t think I’ve ever been one to get too high or too low.”
The 24-year-old Morrow was placed on the disabled list May 2, retroactive to April 24, with biceps tendinitis. He has not pitched since April 23, and is 0-1 with five saves and a 4.05 ERA in seven appearances this season.
He recorded his fifth save the last time he took the mound to put the surprising Mariners in first place in the AL West. But it’s been all down hill since he went on the shelf.
