The fairly strong hints that filtered out weeks ago have become official. The Mariners’ radio broadcasts are returning to KIRO (710 AM) after being on KOMO (1000 AM) since 2003.
A story on KIRO’s web site announced the deal about noon today.
The Mariners’ in-game broadcast crew of Dave Niehaus, Rick Rizzs, Dave Sims and Mike Blowers are team employees and are expected to make the switch. Others who’ve comprised the pregame and postgame shows are KOMO employees who would have to be hired by KIRO.
KIRO aired Mariners games for 18 years before KOMO won the radio contract in 2003 with a deal that brought the team about $10 million per season. Reports have put the current deal at about $5.5 million per season.
Besides regular-season games plus pregame and postgame coverage, KIRO will have a Mariners presence during the offseason and air 20 spring training games. KOMO aired all but three of the Mariners’ 33 exhibitions this year.
