Catcher Mike Zunino, the No. 3 pick in this year’s major-league draft, signed with the Mariners on Monday, the team announced.
Zunino, who recently finished his junior year at the University of Florida, flew to Seattle this weekend for a physical, so his signing was expected at some point this week. He will be introduced at a 1 p.m. press conference on Tuesday.
Zunino helped lead the Gators to the College World Series and earned the Dick Howser Award, which goes to the nation’s top college baseball player. He also won the Johnny Bench Award, which goes to the top catcher, and is one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the top amateur player in baseball.
Zunino hit .322 for the Gators this spring with 19 home runs and 67 RBI.
