The Mariners today signed veteran first baseman Mike Sweeney to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
It’s a low-risk move by the Mariners, who will get to see if Sweeney, a five-time All-Star and a career .299 hitter, has bounced back from injuries that have hampered him the past two years.
Sweeney, 35, batted .286 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 42 games with Oakland last year, when surgery on both knees caused him to miss 85 games between May 29 and Sept. 2.
“Mike has been a very productive hitter in his major league career,” Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. “He hasn’t been 100 percent physically the past couple of years but says he is feeling very good now. We’re looking forward to giving him a chance to come to camp and compete.”
