Turns out a few Mariners were involved the last time a major league player hit four homers in a game – when Mark Whiten did it for St. Louis in 1993.
Batting coach Gerald Perry was a Cardinal player at the time, and the man who called the four pitches Whiten hit for home runs was catcher Dan Wilson.
“It’s not one of my prouder moments,” Wilson said Friday. “It was the second game of a double-header, it was late at night and I’d just been called up from the minors. Whiten had 12 RBI, he had an unbelievable night. It was more fun being on the winning side with Cammy.”
McLemore sits: Against left-hander Ted Lilly, Mark McLemore began Friday’s game on the bench. He’s in a mini-slump, with one hit in his last 10 at-bats and just seven hits in his last 31.
