Mariners Update

Opponent: Toronto Blue Jays

When: 7:05 p.m.

Where: Safeco Field

TV: Fox Sports Net (cable)

Radio: KIRO (710 AM)

Pitchers: Seattle right-hander James Baldwin (3-1, 5.40 earned run average) vs. right-hander Roy Halladay (1-1, 4.08).

Not all work has been finished, but the sharp corner along a railing in foul territory where Ichiro Suzuki sliced his left knee will be covered with padding when the Mariners face the Blue Jays tonight.

“We probably won’t have everything done for this homestand,” Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said. “But they will certainly have fixed the part where Ichiro hit and anything that is a prime or immediate concern.”

Suzuki needed four stitches and missed two starts after he banged his knee against the concrete-and-metal railing near the right-field line as he chased a pop foul on April 26.

Armstrong said the Mariners are looking at several other areas near the field where players could use more protection.

“The toughest ones are the signs along the sides,” he said. “They’re metal. How do you keep the signs and protect the players? Then there’s the concrete underneath the padding. Don’t want them to catch their ankle underneath the padding.”

Cameron shares weekly honor: To the surprise of no one, Mike Cameron’s four-homer performance Thursday at Chicago earned him American League Player of the Week honors.

Cameron, who became just the 13th player in major league history to hit four homers in a game, shares the award with former Mariner shortstop Omar Vizquel, who batted a league-best .526 last week.

Seattle third baseman Jeff Cirillo (.391, 8 RBI) also was considered for the honor.

Coming attractions: Here are the pitching matchups for the rest of the Toronto series: Wednesday – Right-hander Freddy Garcia (4-2, 3.63) vs. right-hander Mike Smith (0-2, 9.00). Thursday – Left-hander Jamie Moyer (3-1, 4.60) vs. right-hander Brandon Lyon (1-3, 6.11). Both games will start at 7:05 p.m. and be televised on Fox Sports Net (cable).
