Wednesday – Left-hander Jamie Moyer (17-5, 3.35) vs. left-hander Scott Schoeneweiss (10-9, 5.10). Thursday – Right-hander Aaron Sele (13-5, 3.71) vs. left-hander Jarrod Washburn (11-8, 3.50).

Bell injured: Third baseman David Bell probably won’t play tonight and his status is considered day-to-day because of a muscle strain in his left rib cage.

Bell was injured during batting practice Friday in the Mariners’ first workout after a three-day layoff because of the East Coast terrorist attacks.

“He took a couple of swings and hurt his rib cage,” manager Lou Piniella said.

As his teammates practiced Monday at Safeco Field, Bell remained in the clubhouse receiving treatment. It’s an injury that trainer Rick Griffin feared when the team returned to workouts after being idle since last Monday’s game in Anaheim.

“They were all warmed up and did everything they could do,” Griffin said. “When you start back up (after a layoff) that’s always a risk. That’s something you worry about.”

Piniella said Mark McLemore would play third base in Bell’s absence and, because Al Martin remains sidelined with an elbow injury, Stan Javier will play left field.

Feeling the intensity: Piniella says it may take a while for the players to regain the intensity that drove them to a 104-40 record. He predicts it will happen in time.

“Once you get into your schedule a little bit and start playing some games, I think that level will rise accordingly,” Piniella said. “It’ll probably happen once you strike out a couple of times or get hit a little bit. You’ve got to remember that athletes face adversity every day.”

Feeling safe: Catcher Dan Wilson has no safety concerns at the ballpark, even though security measures have been stepped up significantly.

“Things have changed,” Wilson said. “We don’t get into the stadium the same way we used to. From the perspective of things that are good that are coming out of this, I think that’s one of them. Things are a little tighter, but that’s a good thing.”
