Challenge Lofton: Something to keep in mind if you’re watching thSeattle-Cleveland series at home: Seattle’s scouting reports urged the team to challenge the arm of center fielder Kenny Lofton, who hasn’t been throwing well.
Should third base coach Dave Myers send a runner who’s out by plenty at the plate, that could well be why – the Mariners plan to run any time the ball is hit to Lofton.
Edgar’s back – finally: Edgar Martinez came off the disabled list Friday, three days after he’d lobbied to play in Detroit.
“It was a good decision,” he admitted, “I’m much better now than I was Tuesday.”
In his absence, Seattle’s designated hitter batted .313 in 17 games, with one home run and 10 RBI. “Getting him back gives us our best 3-4-5 hitters again,” Piniella said. “We’ve missed his presence in the lineup.”
On your left: Playing almost exclusively against left-handed pitching, Ed Sprague is batting .315 in 28 games. As a pinch-hitter, he’s 3-for-6 with two RBI.
