SEATTLE — Carlos Peguero entered Saturday with a .200 average and 37 strikeouts in 110 at-bats, but Mariners manager Eric Wedge said that beyond the numbers, his rookie left fielder actually is adapting well to the major leagues.
“This guy has really gotten better (defensively) and it hasn’t
just happened. He’s worked hard out there,” Wedge said. “You see the potential he has with the raw power, the bat speed, the athleticism, the quickness. What he’s really started to do is take some things into the game. He’s staying taller, more under control, using his hands better. When he gets to the point where he’s doing that consistently, he’s got a chance to be a pretty good ballplayer up here with some power to boot.
“It’s a fine line, but I’ve been really impressed with his overall game getting better up here. He’s slowing the game down and seeing the game the way he needs to see it.”
