While the Mariners play some interesting baseball on the field, there’s a lot of work – along with a fair amount of anxiety – going on upstairs in the front office.
The Mariners are facing a 9 p.m. Monday deadline to sign draft picks with remaining college eligibility or have thos
e players return to the draft pool next year. In the Mariners’ case, that’s all 12 of their remaining unsigned picks.
Among that group are the first three from the June draft – Virginia left-handed pitcher Danny Hultzen (the second overall pick in the draft), Clemson shortstop Brad Miller (second round and high school first baseman Kevin Cron (third round).
I spoke briefly this morning in the Mariners’ clubhouse with general manager Jack Zduriencik, who said there’s a lot going on upstairs in the front office as the organization negotiates with the unsigned players – particularly the top three. Zduriencik didn’t say if the Mariners were close, far or otherwise to agreements.
The other unsigned draft picks are right-handed pitcher Carson Smith (eighth round) of Texas State University, shortstop Cavan Cohoes (ninth) of Patch High School in Germany, right-handed pitcher Tanner Chleborad (24th) of Stevens High School in Rapid City, S.D., right-handed pitcher Keone Kela (29th) of Chief Sealth High in Seattle, left-handed pitcher Ryan Hawthorne (32nd) of Loyola Marymount University, shortstop Taylor Smith-Brennan (34th) of Edmonds CC, right-handed pitcher Jeremy Null (37th) of Bunker Hill High in North Carolina, first baseman Andrew Grifol (49th) of Santa Fe CC in Miami and catcher Esteban Tresgallo (50th) of Marista High School in Puerto Rico.
