Marinovich’s brother arrested

SYRACUSE: Two players — including the younger brother of troubled former NFL quarterback Todd Marinovich — have been charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief, police in Syracuse, N.Y. said.

Running back/safety Paul Chiara and defensive end Mikhail Marinovich were arrested after breaking into a sports equipment room at Manley Field House early Sunday morning, police said.

Marinovich is a 20-year-old freshman from San Clemente, Calif., who played last fall at Milford Academy, a prep school in New Berlin, N.Y., and enrolled at Syracuse in January.

Chiara, a 22-year-old senior from Mountain Lakes, N.J., played tailback in his previous three seasons at Syracuse, but was being moved to safety for spring practice.

Chiara and Marinovich had been drinking alcohol at the time of the incident, the police report said.

Todd Marinovich, who played at USC, was a first-round draft pick and played for the Raiders from 1991-93 before being released. The 38-year-old has had a series of legal troubles.

IOWA: Receiver James Cleveland and backup quarterback Arvell Nelson have been dismissed from the team. Both were arrested on drug charges last month.

Cleveland, Iowa’s second-leading receiver last season, was arrested in his dorm room on Feb. 23 by campus police after officers found 21 units of the prescription pain killer oxycodone and 24 doses of the muscle relaxant carisoprodol. He was charged with a tax stamp violation, a Class D felony, and two counts of unlawful possession of prescription drugs, both serious misdemeanors.

Cleveland, 19, has pleaded not guilty to those charges. Nelson, 19, was arrested on the same night on marijuana possession charges. He has yet to enter a plea.

LAS VEGAS BOWL: Officials announced the 17th annual Las Vegas Bowl will be played at 5 p.m. Dec. 20. It’ll match the top pick from the Mountain West Conference against the fourth-place team from the Pac-10.
