Marysville-Pilchuck boys upset Snohomish, 64-60

Herald staff

MARYSVILLE – Charlie Soper hit three 3-point baskets in the fourth quarter, including a four-point play down the stretch, and Marquis Pittman drained a key basket in the closing minute, to help Marysville-Pilchuck to an uplifting 64-60 Western Conference North Division victory over the Snohomish boys Tuesday night.

Soper finished with a game-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers.

“It was a hard-fought, back-and-forth game,” said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Mike Lowery. “It’s a great win for us.”

Snohomish guard Ryan Sommer paced the Panthers’ play all night and finished with a team-high 23 points.

“(Sommer) played well for them all four quarters. He’s quite a player,” Lowery said.

Scott Shine added 14 points for Snohomish.

Lynden Christian 68, Lakewood 55: Unfortunatly for the Lakewood boys basketball team two quarters of solid basketball isn’t enough to win, especially against one of the state’s top programs.

Lakewood, ahead at halftime, was overpowered in the second half by Lynden Christian Tuesday and the Lyncs pulled out a 68-55 North Cascades Conference win.

Lynden Christian easily broke the Cougars’ press in the first quarter and jumped out to a 12-5 lead with 4:43 remaining in the quarter. Lakewood eased its way back into the game in the second period by dumping the ball in the post to 6-foot-7 senior Jake Poeschel. He finished with a game-high 21 points.

Bret Landman helped the Cougars pull ahead late in the second quarter. Landman, who scored 18 points, completed a four-point play with just under 3:30 left in the quarter to cut Lynden Christian’s lead to three, 33-30. He then hit a long 3-pointer to give Lakewood its first lead of the game, 36-34.

Despite shooting just 38 percent from the field, Lakewood found itself with a 39-38 halftime lead.

The Lyncs jumped on Lakewood early in the second half and went ahead 46-41 with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter.

“That’s were we’ve been all year – peaks and valleys,” Lakewood coach Ron Thorvilson said.

Lakewood had trouble finding Poeschel in the second half and was forced to put up tightly defended 3-point shots.

The Cougars finished 4-for-21 from the 3-point line and scored just 16 points in the second half.
