Marysville-Pilchuck caps soccer comeback with shootout win

FEDERAL WAY — Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawk goalkeeper Kyle Bluhm got big and guessed right as he made nine saves in the game and then converted the decisive shootout kick to cap off Marysville-Pilchuck’s 4-3 come-from-behind win against Jefferson Tuesday in a 4A first-round boys soccer state tournament game at Federal Way Stadium.

The Tomahawks (13-5-1), who trailed by a goal with 3 minutes remaining in regulation, play the Garfield-Stadium winner in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Jefferson had taken the lead twice, first a goal from Chase Hanson off a penalty kick in the 7th minute, and then through Jim Oganga’s second goal of the night in the 54th minute, but the Tomahawks forced overtime with a goal in the 77th minute.

Sophomore midfielder Jesus Valenzuela, who prior to Tuesday’s match played about five minutes total, followed through on a Brady Ballew shot and scored on a 10-yard shot behind Raiders’ goalkeeper Adam Duke.

“It’s awesome to get the job done,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach Geoff Kittle said.

On the other side, Raiders’ coach Dave Hanson was disappointed that his team lost in the shootout where three of his four shooters missed their kicks.

“It was exciting and a fast-paced game,” Hansen said. “We wanted to play our style, win or lose, and we left on our own terms.”

Federal Way 3, Snohomish 2

It was all about being in the right place at the right time for Federal Way.

The Eagles defeated Snohomish 3-2 in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament at Federal Way Stadium on Tuesday and advance to the state quarterfinals for the first time since the 2007 season when Federal Way finished second.

Federal Way (11-5-3), the SPSL No. 7 seed ousted the Panthers (13-6-1), who were playing in their 12th consecutive state tournament.

Sophomore midfielder Colin Kim broke the 2-2 deadlock in the 76th minute in Federal Way’s favor when the long freekick from Kodey Eley bounced off the defending Snohomish player’s to Kim.

“They were nervous, they played tight,” Snohomish coach Dan PIngrey said of his players. “We gave away passes and balls in front of the net. We did a number of silly things.”

Midfielder Spencer Helfrich and forward Brendon Gundry scored for the Panthers in the second half, with Gundry’s goal coming just a minute after Federal Way had taken the 2-1 lead on a goal by Kelyn Rowe in the 63rd minute.

The remainder of the match, was a back and forth battle until Kim scored the game-winner.

“It has to be a combination of finishing your opportunity and not giving up critical errors,” Pingrey added.
