Marysville-Pilchuck hands Stanwood first volleyball loss

STANWOOD – The Marysville-Pilchuck volleyball team opened Western Conference North Division play with a 15-10, 4-15, 15-12, 15-9 victory over previously unbeaten Stanwood on Thursday.

“It was tight all the way,” Stanwood coach Keri Von Moos said. “We had some passing problems toward the end and couldn’t pull it out.”

Marysville-Pilchuck (1-0 in division, 6-0 overall) came back from a 10-2 deficit in the first game by scoring 13 unanswered points.

Leading hitters for Marysville-Pilchuck were Michaela Parker with 18 kills and Ashley Doolan with 14 kills. Stephanie Parker had 49 assists for the Tomahawks.

“We came off a pretty good win earlier this week (a 3-1 victory over Cascade)” Von Moos said. “We maybe weren’t as ready as we should have been.”

Stanwood (0-1, 6-1) was led by Lauren Amundson’s 18 kills and 14 assists and Jenna Von Moos’ 24 assists. Teammates Lindsey Signer and Katelin Parks combined for 25 kills for the Spartans.

Mount Vernon 3, Arlington 1: At Mount Vernon H.S., after losing the first set 1-15, Mount Vernon (1-5 overall, 1-0 in league) won the next three sets 15-8, 15-5, 15-3 to beat Arlington (0-6, 0-2) and earn their first Wesco North victory. Julie Bridgeman had seven kills and Jenny Richter had 15 assists to lead the Bulldogs.

Cascade 3, Oak Harbor 0: At Oak Harbor H. S., Alyssa Smoke had 22 assists and teammate LuAnn Anderson had 14 kills to help Cascade (1-0 in league, 5-1 overall) to a 15-4, 15-13, 15-13 Wesco North victory. Valerie Hartman led Oak Harbor (0-1, 3-4) with 14 assists.

Lake Stevens 3, Monroe 0: At Lake Stevens H.S., the Vikings’ Danielle Adams finished with five blocks and Deanna Cooper had 12 kills to propel Lake Stevens (2-5 overall, 1-0 in league) over Monroe (0-7, 0-1) 15-13, 16-14, 15-11 in the Wesco North opener.

Shorecrest 3, Meadowdale 2: At Shorecrest H.S., eked out a tough 15-10, 10-15, 15-9, 14-16, 15-12 Wesco South win. Kelly Herold of Shorecrest (1-0 league, 4-1 overall) had a game high 47 assists. Mira Dermendjieva led Meadowdale (0-1, 3-3) with 33 assists.

Everett 3, Edmonds-Woodway 0: At Everett H.S., Shannon Ulrich had 14 kills and teammate Emily Olson had 26 assists and 17 digs to lead Everett (1-0 in division, 3-2 overall) to a 15-9, 15-10, 15-12 Wesco South victory over Edmonds-Woodway (3-3, 0-1). Maria Lim had 16 digs and 13 assists for Edmonds-Woodway.

Lynnwood 3, Shorewood 1: At Lynnwood H.S., Lynnwood opened Wesco South Division play with a 15-5, 15-10, 5-15, 15-13 win. Tricia Bartlett led the Royals (1-0 league, 3-3 overall) with 25 assists and five kills. Michelle Dimitrov of Shorewood (0-1, 2-4) had six kills and 16 digs.

Mountlake Terrace 3, Jackson 0: At Mountlake Terrace H.S., Eun Oh had 27 assists and nine saves, while teammate Rachel Galbraith had 13 kills to lead Mountlake Terrace (4-2 overall, 1-0 in league) over Jackson (4-3, 0-1) 15-10, 15-11, 15-12 in the Wesco South opener.

Kamiak 3, Mariner 0: At Kamiak H.S., Heather Hetzer’s 16 kills and Char Babcock’s eight aces helped Kamiak (1-0 in division, 3-2 overall) to a 17-15, 15-12, 15-4 Wesco South victory over Mariner (0-1, 1-4). Melissa Kessel and Tierra Campbell each made seven blocks for Mariner.

South Whidbey 3, Lakewood 0: At Lakewood H.S., South Whidbey (1-0 league, 4-2 overall) opened North Cascades Conference play with a win. Carley Hansen had four kills for Lakewood (0-1, 2-5).

Granite Falls 3, Blaine 2: At Granite Falls, after falling behind 2-0, Granite Falls (5-2 overall, 1-0 in league) rallied to win the next three games to beat Blaine (2-4, 0-1) 10-15, 10-15, 15-9, 15-12, 15-6 in a North Cascades Conference match. Ashley Quinn led the Bearcats with 42 assists and Denise Wilbur and Becky Kirchgessner combined for 43 kills.

Lynden Christian 3, Mount Baker 1: At Lynden Christian H.S., Tara Mouw and Lindsey DeBoer combined for 25 kills to lead Lynden Christian (4-2 overall, 1-0 in league) over Mount Baker (1-6, 0-1) 9-15, 15-5, 15-8, 15-6 in a North Cascades match.

Bellevue Christian 3, King’s 0: King’s lost its second Chinook League match 15-11, 16-14, 15-9. Kelly Irvin led King’s (5-2 league, 5-2 overall) with 14 assists and seven aces. Jamie Dixon of Bellevue Christian (3-2, 4-2) had 13 assists.

Darrington 3, Mount Vernon Christian 1: At Mount Vernon Christian H.S., sophomore Amy Jones had 10 kills and senior Britta Smith added five kills and 25 digs to lead Darrington (3-1 in league, 6-1 overall) to the 15-9, 15-12, 9-15, 15-13 Northwest B League victory.

Lopez 3, Skykomish 0: At Skykomish H.S., Megan McCoy and Zoey Jones combined to serve 28-for-28 with five aces and seven kills to lead Lopez (8-1 overall, 4-0 in league) to a 15-7, 15-9, 15-3 Northwest B League victory over Skykomish.

Cedar Park Christian 3, Summit 1: At Cedar Park Christian H.S., Cedar Park Christian stayed atop the Sea-Tac B League standings with a 15-12, 15-13, 10-15, 15-13 win over Summit. Cedar Park (3-0 league, 4-1 overall) picked up the win with Sarah Keifer’s seven kills, Ashley Johnson’s seven blocks and the 15 digs of Emilie Vallerand and 13 digs of Ashleigh Salios.

Grace Academy 3, Master’s Touch 2: Senior Jeremy Short scored 15 seconds into sudden death to secure the Northwest A/B League victory for Grace Academy.

Shoreline Christian 8, La Conner 2: Darren Broekhuis scored two goals and had three assists and teammate Garth Brandal added two goals for Shoreline Christian in the Northwest A/B League victory.
