Not surprisingly, Pete Carroll’s Monday press conference was dominated by questions about injuries, with a couple of Randy Moss questions thrown in for good measure (more on this below). It sounds like the worst injury was the knee injury suffered by starting DE Red Bryant, who has been a big part of the Seahawks’ defensive success this year.
“He’s going to be out a while, at best,” Carroll said.
To recap, Bryant hurt his knee in the first half of Sunday’s game when teammate Chris Clemons fell into Bryant’s leg. After the game, Bryant had a brace on his leg and was on crutches.
Bryant’s injury may be the most serious, but it is far from the only one that came out of the 33-3 loss.
Matt Hasselbeck has a concussion that Carroll called minor (not sure how any brain injury is minor, but whatever). Carroll said he expects that Hasselbeck will be able to play, but that “He still has to go through the process.” The process being the tests players have to pass to show they’re back to normal function after a concussion.
And speaking of concussions, LG Ben Hamilton has one too, and Carroll called it a significant concussion. Even if Hamilton does get back this week, however, he may lose his job to Chester Pitts, though Carroll wouldn’t speculate on that.
OK, who else? T Tyler Polumbus has a “slight knee sprain,” DT Colin Cole has an ankle sprain, as does WR Golden Tate. Tate is in a boot today, and Carroll said it “could take a while” for Tate to get back. WR Brandon Stokley, who entered the game with an oblique injury came out of the game well, Carroll said.
The news sounds more promising on the players who missed Sunday’s game. Carroll said LT Russell Okung (ankle) could return to practice as soon as Wednesday. Getting him back would be huge given that the Seahawks face the New York Giants and their daunting pass rush on Sunday.
Carroll said cornerbacks Kelly Jennings (hamstring) and Walter Thurmond (concussion) have a good shot at getting back this week as well.
With all of those injuries, there is a good chance the Seahawks may need to add help on the offensive line or at receiver this week.
“There’s some work being done,” Carroll said. “John [Schneider] and his guys are scurrying up there.”
And now a bit of non-injury news
In case you hadn’t heard, there have been multiple reports today saying the Vikings are going to waive WR Randy Moss, who they recently acquired in a trade with New England (reports initially said he had been waived, but the move didn’t happen by today’s waiver deadline, so if it is going to happen, it will have to wait until tomorrow). According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Moss’ agent said the Seahawks are one of the teams interested in possibly acquiring the receiver.
Carroll was asked about that possibility, and noted that he hadn’t heard of the move being official yet. “I haven’t called him yet,” Carroll said.
Later, when a reporter asked if the team may hypothetically be interested in a high-profile receiver should one be available, Carroll said: “You mean a real tall guy who wears 84, is that what you’re saying? I’m not doing hypotheticals, but it was a good try.”
Leon Washington, who on Sunday returned punts for the first time this season, splitting time with Tate, will take over that role for the time being with Tate ailing.
