Mavs outrun Griz

EDMONDS — Meadowdale’s Giavani Shepard ran wild against Glacier Peak in a key Wesco 3A showdown Friday night.

Shepard rushed for 201 yards on 24 carries and scored one touchdown to lead the Mavericks to a 34-17 victory over the Grizzlies Friday night at Edmonds Stadium.

Meadowdale finished with 349 yards on the ground with running backs Kyler Larsen and Kyle Newsom also scoring. Quarterback Brian Marty completed 6 of 13 passes for just 44 yards but threw touchdown passes to Larsen and Ryan White.

Meadowdale took a 7-0 lead on a 15-yard run by Newsom with 31 seconds left in the first quarter.

Larsen extended the Mavericks’ lead to 14-0 with a 19-yard touchdown run at the 7:40 mark of the second quarter.

Glacier Peak finally got on the scoreboard with 3:50 left in the first half when quarterback David Linney threw a 17-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Quinton Dunbar.

But that still left time for the Mavericks to mount the final scoring drive of the first half. Marty connected on a 3-yard touchdown pass to Larsen with 10 seconds left in the second quarter as Meadowdale headed into the locker room with a 21-7 lead.

After forcing Meadowdale to punt on its first drive on the second half, Glacier Peak cut the deficit to 21-10 on a 27-yard field goal by Linney.

On the ensuing Meadowdale drive, a fumble was recovered by Glacier Peak’s Casey Welch and the Grizzlies took advantage. Linney threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Evan Nelson as Glacier Peak drew to within 21-17.

The Mavericks answered right back as Marty found wide receiver Ryan White with a 9-yard touchdown pass to boost the lead to 27-17.

In the fourth quarter Shepard finally broke through to the end zone on a 2-yard run with 2;13 remaining in the game.
