PULLMAN — Washington notched its 25th consecutive victory over Washington State as 6-foot-5 freshman center Jess McCormack, from New Zealand, scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Huskies in a 61-46 win Friday night.
The contest was the first time the Huskies faced former coach June Daugherty, now coaching the Cougars after being fired by Washington last March after 11 seasons.
Katelan Redmon scored 14 points for the Huskies (6-9, 1-2 Pacific-10). Emily Florence added 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Katie Appleton led Washington State (3-11, 0-3) with 16 points and five rebounds.
Washington fell behind 13-4 and trailed most of the first half, but led 28-26 at halftime. The Huskies outscored WSU 15-6 in the first 10 minutes of the second half and were never threatened after that.
The Huskies pressed and trapped, leading to 22 turnovers, and out-rebounded the smaller Cougars 43-32. Ebonee Coates, WSU’s 6-4 center, missed the game with a concussion suffered last Sunday at California.
While coaching the Huskies, Daughtery went 22-0 against WSU.
The Cougars last defeated Washington 72-67 on Feb. 25, 1995, in Pullman.
The Cougars have lost 20 consecutive Pac-10 games since winning their conference opener last season at Oregon State. WSU has not recorded a winning overall record since 1995-96, and the Cougars’ only winning Pac-10 record in the 22 years of Pac-10 women’s play came in 1990-91.
The Huskies, who start two freshmen, had lost two in a row and five of six.
