McCracken leads Jackson to 49-44 win vs. Shorecrest

SHORELINE – The Jackson Timberwolves rode the 22 points of Sam McCracken to a 49-44 victory over Shorecrest in a Western Conference South Division girls basketball game Friday night.

Leading 8-6 in the final seconds of the first quarter, McCracken made a 35-foot shot at the buzzer to give Jackson a five-point advantage.

“That kind of hurt,” Shorecrest coach Jon Rasmussen said.

Jackson (2-0 Wesco South, 3-0 overall) eventually built its lead to 25-14 by the end of the second quarter as Shorecrest (1-1, 1-2) struggled with shooting woes.

“Cold shooting in the first half just killed us,” Rasmussen said of his team, which managed to make just four of 19 shots in the first two quarters.

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Scots rallied gamely in the final period behind Amy Farquhar (14 points, eight rebounds).

Steady 8-for-9 free throw shooting down the stretch, including Kristi Kingma’s 4-for-4 effort, helped the Timberwolves hold Shorecrest at bay. For the game Jackson made 18 of 23 free throw attempts.

“We made a run,” Rasmussen said. “We just ran out of time. “

Kingma finished with 11 points for Jackson. Kat Binder and Jocelyn Riordan added nine and eight, respectively, for Shorecrest.
