Meadowdale beats Oak Harbor in five-set thriller

OAK HARBOR — In a match that pitted two of the top volleyball teams in the Wesco 3A conference, Meadowdale narrowly defeated Oak Harbor 3-2 by scores of 27-29, 13-25, 25-14, 25-18, and 15-11 in Oak Harbor Thursday night.

With both teams coming off their first conferences losses earlier in the week, Oak Harbor head coach Kerri Molitor knew this game was going to be tough.

“We knew (this game) was going to be evenly matched,” Molitor said. “We like to play Meadowdale, they are a mentally tough team. After the first set we started making errors and they capitalized on those and took advantage”

Payton Shrum had 50 assists and 16 digs, and Lindsey Milner added 24 kills and 13 digs for the Mavericks (6-1 league 8-1 overall). Molitor was impressed by the play of Shrum.

“She’s tough,” Molitor said. “She hits as well out of the back row as she does out of the front row. She is very hard to defend.”

Janinie DeGuzman had 12 kills and 24 digs, Roshel Muzzall had nine kills, 20 digs, and three aces, and Christina Alexander added 27 digs for the Wildcats (4-2, 5-4). Molitor singled out DeGuzman as a player who has become a quiet leader on the team.

“She’s not very big but she’s such a fireball for us. She’s our outside hitter, she jumps well, and she plays incredible defense.”

Although not pleased with the loss, Molitor was happy with the atmosphere that surrounded the game.

“It was a great game for the fans to watch. It was very loud and the bleachers were packed. Both teams displayed really good sportsmanship, so it was a fun match.”
