Meadowdale bounces Snohomish

LYNNWOOD – Defense wins games.

And that’s what Meadowdale, the defending Wesco South champion, used to beat Snohomish 69-52 in a non-league girls basketball game Wednesday night.

“I feel our defense worked really well this game,” Meadowdale assistant coach Stephanie Urrutia said. ”We got in the passing lanes and basically shut down their key players.

Meadowdale’s Hanna Fjortoft, who scored 14 points, hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first quarter to cap a 10-2 run and give the Mavericks a 16-14 lead which they never relinquished.

Marelle Moehrle had 15 of her game-high 28 points in the first half to lead Meadowdale to a 10 point halftime lead.

Snohomish’s Katie Benson scored six of her 11 points early in the third quarter, cutting Meadowdale’s lead to 37-32. Meadowdale responded by switching to a full-court press.

“We wanted to apply more pressure and see how they reacted to it and it worked in our favor,” Urrutia said

Meadowdale’s Eryn Jones scored 14 of her 20 points in the third quarter as the Mavericks stretched their lead to 19 points.

“Both (Jones and Moehrle) our captains are our leaders,” Urrutia said. ”They stepped it up when they needed to.”

Snohomish was lead by Karley Lampman’s 18 points.
