Meadowdale earns district berth

LYNNWOOD – One match will not be enough for Edmonds School District rivals Meadowdale and Lynnwood.

Meadowdale staved off elimination from the postseason by defeating Lynnwood 3-1 Tuesday in the final regular season Western Conference South Division volleyball match between the two teams.

With the 15-12, 14-16, 15-4, 15-13 victory, Meadowdale (5-4 league, 8-6 overall) finished fifth in the 3A Northwest District standings and dropped Lynnwood (6-3, 8-6) into fourth. Hence, the two will meet again in the first round of the district playoffs in a loser-out match at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lynnwood H.S.

The loss also cost Lynnwood a share of the South championship, which went to Mountlake Terrace.

Lauren Marty had 19 kills and six service aces and Jennie Swerk had eight kills and three aces for Meadowdale.

Jenna Huston had 22 kills and 14 digs, Trisha Bartlette had 41 assists and Molly Hunsinger had 14 kills for Lynnwood.

Mountlake Terrace 3, Shorewood 0: At Shorewood H.S., the Hawks won the Wesco South match 15-10, 17-15, 15-12. The victory combined with Lynnwood’s loss gave the Hawks the division championship. Kelsey Voetmann helped the cause with 18 kills and 13 blocks, while Eun Oh provided 21 assists and 18 digs. For Shorewood, Sandra McCartney and Claire Steadman combined for 26 assists and Joann Yang posted five kills and 1 1/2 stuff blocks. Mountlake Terrace improved to 7-2 in league and 10-4 overall. The Thunderbirds are 4-5, 6-8.

Shorecrest 3, Edmonds-Woodway 1: At Edmonds-Woodway H.S., Shorecrest (5-4 league, 8-5 overall) stunned the third-place Warriors (5-4, 8-6) in Wesco South Division play 8-15, 15-4, 15-6, 15-11. Kelly Herold had 33 assists and 18 digs for the Scots, while teammates. Becky Scherer and Sadie Steveimer posted 11 kills. For Edmonds-Woodway, Sara Allen had 22 assists and served 10-of-10, Tiana Roma had 16 kills and Haley Shellhorn recorded 20 digs.

Jackson 3, Kamiak 0: At Jackson H.S., Jamie Crockett had 10 kills, Katie Eshelman had 21 assists and Liz Poier had five blocks to lead Jackson (3-6 league, 6-8 overall) to the 15-13, 15-11, 15-7 Wesco South victory. Heather Hetzer led Kamiak (5-4, 7-7) with 21 kills.

Everett 3, Mariner 0: At Mariner H.S., the Seagulls’ Chelsea Beck recorded eight kills, Morgan Bagge had 14 digs and four blocks and the team served 10 combined aces in their Wesco South match. For the Marauders (0-8 league, 1-11 overall), Nicole Mauge had 11 assists, Tierra Campbell spiked six kills and had six stuffed blocks. Everett improved to 5-4, 8-6.

Cascade 3, Stanwood 0: At Cascade H.S., tThe Bruins (7-1 league, 12-2 overall) had no trouble in a Wesco North match with Stanwood (5-3, 11-3). Cascade won 15-9, 15-11, 15-9 and wrapped up second place in the division. Brittany Bekins had 28 assists for the Bruins. Spartan Lindsey Signer had 10 kills.

Lake Stevens 3, Arlington 2: At Arlington H.S., Deanna Cooper served 20-for-20 and had 13 kills and two blocks and Erin Sherard had 21 assists to help Lake Stevens (3-5 league, 4-10 overall) earn the 15-6, 8-15, 15-5, 11-15, 15-3 Wesco North victory. Vicki Frank had seven kills and Maureen Peper had five for Arlington (1-7, 1-13).

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Mount Vernon 0: At Marysville-Pilchuck H.S., the undefeated (8-0 league, 14-0 overall) Tomahawks continued their dominating ways, beating Mount Vernon (1-7, 1-13) 15-7, 16-14, 15-7. Stephanie Parker had 31 assists for M-P and was 16-for-16 serving with four aces. Mariko Coverdale had 11 kills and Sara Whitehall posted three kills and three stuffed blocks.

Snohomish 3, Monroe 0: At Monroe H.S., the Panthers (6-2 league, 12-2 overall) defeated Monroe (1-7, 1-13) in straight sets 15-7, 15-6, 13-5 in the Wesco North game. Megan Silver of Snohomish had 13 kills. Monroe’s Kalynn Simmons was 9-for-9 serving.

North Cascades second-place tiebreaker: At Mount Vernon H.S., the Lyncs, Tigers and Pioneers (all 6-2 in league) entered into a three-way playoff to determine their final placing in the North Cascades Conference, behind first place Meridian. The Lyncs beat Granite Falls 15-7, 15-12 and Nooksack Valley 15-9, 16-14 to take second place. Granite Falls won coin toss with Nooksack Valley for third. Freshman setter Kristin DeHaan had a total of 60 assists in both matches for Lynden Christian.

Archbishop Murphy 2, Friday Harbor 0: At La Conner H.S., in a Northwest A League fourth-place tiebreaker, the Wildcats (4-10 overall) beat Friday Harbor (3-7) 17-15, 15-9 and qualified for the district playoffs. Lauren Coate had 13 kills and six blocks for the Wildcats and teammates Kristen Linscott scored three aces and six kills accompanied by 21perfect serves.

Darrington 2, Lopez 0: At Mount Vernon, in a for first-place tiebreaker in the Northwest B League, Darrington captured the first seed going into the B tri-district tournament on Saturday. The Loggers (13-1) defeated Lopez (13-4) 15-10, 15-9. Becky Nations of Darrington had 13 assists and was a perfect 13-13 serving. Harmony Perrault had 12 digs for the Loggers.

Sultan 4, Blaine 0: The Turks led 1-0 after the first half of their North Cascades winner-to-state playoff game, but did some defensive fine tuning and increased the tempo of the offense in the second half, leading to two goals by Heather Howard, who headed one off an assist by Mara Potteiger.

Meridian 4, South Whidbey 0: Meridian’s Autumn Covert scored the only goal of the first half of the North Cascades Conference playoff game. In the second half, the Johnson sisters took care of the rest, with Katie scoring twice and Jennifer scoring the team’s final goal. The Trojans play Sultan on Saturday for the district championship. Both teams advance to state.

Goals-Meridian: Covert, K. Johnson, K. Johnson, J. Johnson. Goalkeepers-South Whidbey: not reported. Meridian: Noel. Records-South Whidbey: 10-8 overall. Meridian: 16-1.

Grace Academy 4, Shoreline Christian 3: Grady Harmon scored a hat trick in regulation for the Eagles in the Northwest A/B League playoff game. A shootout was held instead of overtime due to impending darkness. In the shootout, Grace won 8-7. Jeremy Martin was the deciding factor for Grace Academy. Grace, the fourth seed from the Northwest District, will play the second-seeded team from the Sea-Tac A/B League Friday in the first round of the tri-district tournament.

Goals-Grace: Harmon. Shoreline Christian: Ching, Brandal, Prins. Goalkeepers-Grace: Lugg. SC: Kaemingk. Records-Grace: 8-6-1. SC: 7-5.

Correction: Arlington High School Athletic Director Allen Jefferson said the school district is looking into purchasing an artificial surface for its football facility, but no decision has been made. An article in Tuesday’s Prep Notebook indicated that a decision had been made.
