Meadowdale gains district playoff berth

LYNNWOOD – Basketball is not the only girls sport enjoying success at Meadowdale these days.

Not only is the soccer team heading to the playoffs, the Mavs’ volleyball squad rebounded from a lacklustre third game to defeat the Arlington Eagles in four games (25-15, 25-20, 12-25, 25-10) Friday night in a Wesco 3A tiebreaker.

With the win, Meadowdale earns the No. 4 Wesco slot in the 3A District 1 playoffs. The two teams each entered the tiebreaker match with 1-7 records, with the winner advancing to the postseason.

This is Meadowdale’s first trip to the playoffs in eight years, and first-year head coach Machen Shrum gives her players all the credit.

“We’re very excited and relieved,” said Shrum. “The girls worked so hard to get to this one game.”

The Mavs’ attack was led by juniors Katie Cowan (35 assists) and Brianna Dyson (14 kills).

“Katie’s one of the best setters around,” Shrum said. And Brianna really stepped it up, hit the ball well, and lit a fire under the team.”

Sophomore Mara Eberth (21 digs) and senior Allie Demopoulos (five blocks, four aces) also chipped in for Meadowdale (4-11 overall).

Seniors Keesha Carpenter (16 assists, seven aces, six kills) and Shayna Prause (11 kills, 15 digs) provided the Eagles’ highlights as they end their season 1-14 overall.

The Mavericks have little time to savor their victory, as the District 1 playoffs start today in Ferndale. Meadowdale faces the Northwest League’s No. 1 seed Mount Vernon at 1 p.m.

Cedar Park Christian-Everett 3, Skykomish 1: At Everett, Cedar Park Christian-Everett (3-9 league, 3-11 overall) defeated Skykomish (1-11, 1-12) 25-23, 18-25, 25-7, 25-20 in the Northwest 1B League match.

Master’s Touch 3, Grace Academy 0: At Arlington, Sharaya Burrows had nine kills and three blocks and Bethany Hawkins served nine aces as the Falcons (6-6 in league, 6-8 overall) blanked the Eagles (2-11, 2-13) in Northwest 1B action, 25-10, 25-18, 25-19.
