ARLINGTON – The Meadowdale Mavericks knocked off the Arlington Eagles 2-0 in a girls soccer game on Thursday night at Arlington to stay on top of the Western Conference 3A.

Sophomore midfielder Kate Nelson scored the first of her two goals in the 73rd minute off Lora Reed’s cross from the left side of the goal.

Nelson struck again in the 78th minute from 18 yards out off a drop pass from Joscelyn Riach.

“Our team defense was the key tonight, we controlled the ball that led to our counter attacks,” Mavericks coach Mike Bartley said.

Bartley said Mavericks’ stopper Kelsey Neagle stepped up to limit the effectiveness of Arlington’s Kayla Burt.

Mavericks’ goalkeeper Ally Wirtala cleared a breakaway chance for the Eagles 25 yards off the goal line. Wirtala recorded her third shutout of the season.

“It was a great win for us in a game where both teams played well,” Bartley said.
