TACOMA – In their first-ever appearance at the state tournament, the Auburn Riverside Ravens shocked Meadowdale, the 2004 Class 3A state champion, with a 52-45 overtime victory Wednesday in a Class 4A first-round girls basketball game at the Tacoma Dome.
Rylee Denbo and Julie Futch combined to score 33 points for Auburn Riverside (19-7), which rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime. The Ravens play the Garfield Bulldogs (23-1) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Sophomore guard Marelle Moehrle (13 points, 13 rebounds) led Meadowdale, which shot 18-for-85 (21.2 percent) from the floor and closed the game with 20 straight misses until Latrina Woods made a meaningless 3-point basket at the final buzzer. The Mavericks (22-2), losers of two straight games after winning 38 in a row, play Kentlake (22-4) at 9 a.m. Thursday in a loser-out contest.
