MOUNT VERNON – The Meadowdale boys basketball team bounced back from a tough loss to Lynden on Saturday to defeat Anacortes 66-49 Monday night in the consolation bracket of the 4A Northwest District basketball tournament.
The Mavericks used a pivotal fourth-quarter performance to defeat the Seahawks and stay alive in the tournament.
“In a tournament like this teams are going to have to come back and win after a loss,” said Meadowdale coach Troy Parker. “Mentally tough teams are going to get it done and we came out and did it tonight.”
The win advances Meadowdale into another loser-out game. The Mavericks play Sehome at 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon High School. Sehome beat Bellingham 55-52 on Monday night. The loss ends Anacortes’ season.
In the fourth quarter Meadowale was led by Chris Rohrbach. Rohrbach scored 10 of his 16 points in the period to help the Mavericks outscore Anacortes 22-11.
“(Rohrbach) is a classic example of a kid with a motor that’s always running,” said Parker. “The fourth quarter was another example of Chris making a team pay for not playing him hard all the time.”
Trevor Winnie led the Mavericks with a game-high 17 points, which included three 3-pointers.
