Meadowdale wins without its head coach

EDMONDS — Meadowdale clinched at least a share of the Wesco 3A South football championship Friday night with a 41-7 win over Lynnwood — and the Mavericks did it without their head coach, Mike Don, who was absent from the game.

Asked about Don’s absence, assistant head coach Troy Parker, who handled the heading-coaching duties, said “I can’t talk about that right now. To be honest, it’s not mine to talk about.”

The Mavericks scored on their first two possessions of the game thanks to the foot of senior kicker Brett Schafer, who kicked field goals of 44 and 27 yards.

After a second-quarter safety gave Meadowdale an 8-0 lead, the Mavericks scored their first touchdown of the game on a 58-yard punt return by senior Malik Braxton. Braxton also intercepted a pass late in the third quarter and returned it 19 yards for a Meadowdale touchdown, and caught four passes for 86 yards.

The Mavericks lead grew again before halftime on a 6-yard touchdown run by Rory Spillum. The Mavericks took a 22-0 lead into the locker room after Spillum scored the game’s first offensive touchdown.

Glacier Peak led Mountlake Terrace 22-0 at halftime in the game that preceded the Mavericks and Royals. Lynnwood didn’t have similar luck in the nightcap.

Schafer made his third field goal of the game — and second from 40-plus yards — in the third quarter when his 45-yarder gave Meadowdale a 25-0 lead.

Meadowdale’s Caleb Tingstad added a second rushing touchdown and Braxton scored on his interception return before the third quarter came to an end.

Lynnwood senior Lawton Manipon scored the Royals’ only touchdown of the game with 8:28 to play in the fourth quarter on a 100-yard interception return.
