Medicine Hat routs Silvertips 10-2

MEDICINE HAT, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips have had a tough enough time as it is on their swing through the WHL’s Central Division. Add a case of the flu going through the team and things got out of hand.

The Tips matched a franchise record for goals allowed in a game as they fell 10-2 to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Tuesday night.

The only other time the tips allowed double digits came in a 10-0 season-ending loss at Seattle in 2009.

Everett completely collapsed in the third period, when they allowed six goals to make the final score ugly. The six goals set a new franchise mark for goals allowed in a period.

Hunter Shinkaruk had a big game for Medicine Hat (12-5-0-0), tallying three goals and three assists. Emerson Etem added a goal and four assists and Dylan Bredo had a goal and three assists for the Tigers.

Cole Grbavac, James Bettauer, Reid Petryk, Boston Leier and Patrik Parkkonen scored the other goals for Medicine Hat, while Tyler Bunz earned the win in goal for the Tigers with 23 saves.

Ryan Harrison and Cody Fowlie scored for Everett (4-11-0-2), which was once again outshot by a big margin. Medicine Hat outshot the Tips 52-25, and Everett has been outshot by at least 25 in all four of its games against Central Division foes.

Everett goaltender Kent Simpson stopped 14 of 16 shots before being pulled late in the first period. Austin Lotz stopped 28 of 36 in relief.

THe first period was a horror show for Everett as the Tigers outshot the Tips 19-5 and put the puck in the net five times, though just three of those counted. Simpson received the hook after one of the disallowed goals late in the period.

Everett’s play improved in the second period. The Tips outshot the Tigers 15-13 and the teams traded goals to make it 4-1.

But it all fell apart for Everett in the third as the Tigers took advantage of the tiring Tips, scoring four times in just over nine minutes to turn it into a rout.
