KITCHENER, Ontario — If his performance at the Memorial Cup is any indication, Shawn Matthias is feeling just fine.
Matthias, who missed two months because of mononucleosis, has three goals in the tournament, including two in Monday night’s 6-3 victory by his Belleville Bulls over the Gatineau Olympiques.
With the Belleville win, the Spokane Chiefs (2-0) earned an automatic berth in Sunday’s final, having already defeated Kitchener and Belleville, the two teams that could tie the Chiefs’ record should they lose to Gatineau tonight.
For its part, Belleville (1-1), at the very least, will play a fourth game. They can do no worse than Thursday’s tiebreaker game, which would only happen if Gatineau (0-2) beats Spokane and the Bulls lose to Kitchener on Wednesday.
Any other combination of results would give Belleville a spot in Friday’s semifinal.
Gatineau, meanwhile, must win tonight against the Chiefs to still have a shot at avoiding elimination.
