Chandler Parsons will get his chance to torment the Mavericks next season as a member of the division-rival Memphis Grizzlies.
The only remaining question is whether he’ll be joining point guard Mike Conley — and every sign suggests he will.
Parsons, who spent two years in Dallas before opting out of his contract last month, agreed to a maximum contract with the Grizzlies that is expected to be worth about $94 million over four seasons.
Several reports stated that the small forward and Grizzlies agreed quickly after meeting on Friday. A league source confirmed the deal. Parsons had met late Thursday night in Los Angeles with representatives of the Portland Trail Blazers.
It had become clear earlier this week that Parsons would not be returning to the Mavericks, who were hesitant to offer a full, max salary to a player who has had knee surgery in each of the last two seasons.
Parsons, assuming he passes a physical, can officially sign the contract on Wednesday.
Left to be decided is the fate of Conley, whom the Mavericks were believed to be meeting with Friday. Conley reportedly is leaning toward a return to Memphis and partnering with Parsons certainly has its lure. That Parsons would give a quick nod to the Grizzlies would seem to suggest Conley’s return is a formality.
The Mavericks, having already lost out on center Hassan Whiteside and small forward Nic Batum in free-agent movement overnight, now will continue the search to fill holes not only at center and point guard, but also to replace Parsons.
