The Huskies are just two days away from an exhibition game against Western Washington, so we talked to Lorenzo Romar and a few players to see how the team is going heading into their first game in front of a crowd (the team played a closed scrimmage against Wyoming, but can’t report scores or stats from that).
Romar indicated what four fifths of the starting lineup would look like, naming Jon Brockman, Quincy Pondexter, Isaiah Thomas and Justin Dentmon as probably starters. Darnell Gant and Matthew Bryan-Amaning are the likely candidates to earn the fifth spot. It is possible both could start in Thursday’s exhibition, however, as Brockman is limited with back spasms right now. Both he and Romar said the injury is not serious, and Brockman said he doesn’t expect it to be a problem come Thursday. Gant, a forward who redshirted last season, seems to be one of the up-and-comers this fall in practice, and Romar today praised his energy saying, “he just plays like he wants to win, plays with a purpose.”
Venoy Overton, the starting point guard most of last year, has been slowed since last week by an ankle injury, but said he should be ready to play Thursday. The sophomore from Seattle’s Franklin High said he isn’t worried about whether he’ll start or not, so long as he is playing and contributing.
As for that scrimmage the team is not allowed to give details on, Romar did say that he’d liked what he saw in terms of the team’s ability to score, but that rebounding needs to improve.
