The Everett Merchants routed the Seattle Wallbangers 13-3 in the team’s season-opener on Saturday afternoon at Funko Field at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Everett starter Jared Maxfield threw five strong innings, allowing only one unearned run, to earn the victory.
Maxfield was immediately staked with ample run support as the Merchants batted around and tallied five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Austin Hauck smacked the first pitch for a double. Max Nealon then singled to put runners on the corners. Sam Linscott singled in Hauck, Max Whitt earned a RBI on a speedy infield hit, Jake Tilley added an RBI on a fielder’s choice, Koby Blunt stroked a RBI single and another RBI came on Hauck’s bases-loaded walk.
Everett added on two in the third when Hauck belted an RBI double and later scored on an error.
The Merchants broke the contest wide open in the sixth with six runs, led by Blunt’s three-run, stand-up triple. Jack Sheward contributed an RBI single, Jared Wade an RBI double and Lincscott an RBI single.
Everett hosts the Wallbangers again at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Funko Field.
