Strong pitching carried the Everett Merchants during a doubleheader against Coquitlam, but a seventh-inning hiccup in the second game allowed the home team to salvage a split with Everett.
In the first game, Everett’s Tyler Rice pitched four innings and Chris Dennis threw two scoreless innings for the save as the Merchants took a 2-1 win. Zack Miller batted 2-for-4 with an RBI groundout in the first inning. Josh Short added another RBI groundout for Everett (7-1) in the fourth inning.
Everett led 2-0 in the second game, before a rocky seventh inning allowed Coquitlam (5-3) to steal a win. A walk, a hit batter and a two-base throwing error allowed one run to score before an RBI groundout tied the game and a sacrifice fly ended it. Coquitlam only recorded one hit in the game.
Short batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and Chad Dias hit a solo home run for Everett.
