Merkley, Oam on collision course at district

STANWOOD — Chad Merkley of Snohomish and Richard Oam of Jackson remained on course toward a rematch of last year’s 4A District 1 singles championship after the first round of the tournament Thursday at Stanwood High School.

Oam, the defending champion and the Wesco South No. 1 seed, and Merkley, last year’s runnerup and the Wesco North No. 1 seed, both won their opening matches in straight sets.

The match of the day was between South No. 2 seed Robin Choi and North No. 3 seed Cooper Amsberry. Choi came back from a first-set loss in a tiebreaker to win a third-set tiebreaker to advance to today’s semifinals.

The top-seeded teams of Reed Pecha-Zach Stockwell (Snohomish) and Willie Guo-Ryan Cho (Edmonds-Woodway) advanced to the doubles semifinals. Pecha-Stockwell were forced to three sets and won a second-set tiebreaker to avoid an upset.

First round singles—Merkley (Snohomish) def. Ahn (Kamiak) 6-3, 6-3; Choi (Jackson) def. C. Amsberry (Monroe) 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5 (8-6); Bouche (Mountlake Terrace) def. Koetje (Stanwood) 6-4, 6-3; Oam (Jackson) def. T. Amsberry (Monroe) 6-0, 6-1.

Semifinals—Merkley vs. Choi; Bouche vs. Oam.

Consolation (losers out)—A, Amsberry vs. Ahn; T. Amsberry vs. Koetje.

First round doubles—Pecha-Stockwell (Snohomish) def. Wilson-McAuliffe(Shorewood) 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3; Stepenski-Ortiz (Edmonds-Woodway) def. Kesler-Gidden (Lake Stevens) 6-2, 6-2; McConnell-Reni (Shorewood) def. Schonberg-Beauchamp (Stanwood) 6-2, 6-1; Guo-Cho (Edmonds-Woodway) def. Ratzke-Shields (Snohomish) 6-2, 6-1.

Semifinals—Pecha-Stockwell vs. Stepenski-Ortiz; McConnell-Reni vs. Guo-Cho.

Consolation (losers out)—Kesler-Gidden vs. Wilson-McAuliffe; ratzke-Shields vs. Schonberg-Beauchamp.

3A District 1 meet: At Mt. Vernon, Everett’s Any Monro advanced to the championship final of the singles tournament with a pair of straight-sets wins. He plays Shorecrest’s Ricardo Cellis today. The winner receives a state meet berth.

In doubles play, Pat Donnelly and Jake Haight of Meadowdale advanced to meet Brian Sharkey and Matt LaCourse of Shorecrest in the final.

All five Wesco singles players survived Thursday as did four of the conference’s five doubles entries.

At Mt. Vernon H.S.

First round singles—Monro (Everett) def. Casper (Meadowdale) 6-1, 6-2; Hollenbeck (Shorecrest) def. Cho (Squalicum) 6-1, 6-2; Cellis (Shorecrest) def. Turk (Squalicum) 6-2, 6-2); Bohmke (Meadowdale) def. Lien (Mt. Vernon) 6-4, 6-4.

Semifinals—Monro def. Hollenbeck 6-1, 7-6 (6-4); Cellis (def. Bohmke 6-1, 6-1.

Consolation (losers out)—Casper def. Cho 6-2, 6-3; Turk def. Lien 6-2, 6-3.
