Michael Bartley

2001: Meadowdale (13-3-2 overall) nearly won the Class 4A Western Conference South Division despite being one of only two 3A schools in the league. The team’s 7-1-1 conference record was good enough for second behind Shorewood (8-0-1). The Mavericks then entered the 3A playoffs, where they won the Northwest District title and qualified for the state playoffs. They beat White River 4-0 in the first round, then lost a heartbreaker, 1-0, to Lakeside in a quarterfinal. Meadowdale allowed only eight goals all season.

Background: After graduating from Cascade High School in 1980, Bartley was an all-league defender for an Everett Community College team that won an NWAACC title. He coached the Eastside Catholic girls from 1988-96 and the Issaquah boys from 1990-94. Bartley, who is a buyer for Boeing, has coached the Jackson boys for the past seven years. His Jackson team played in a state quarterfinal in the spring. The Mavericks have won three conference titles and one district championship during Bartley’s five years.

Comment: Bartley credited Terri McMahan, the Edmonds School District athletic director, for funding a new practice field at Meadowdale and the FieldTurf surface at Lynnwood High School where Meadowdale played its home games. He also said the Meadowdale staff, athletes and parents “made it easy to coach,” and that assistant coaches Darrell Hamilton and John Sanguinet did outstanding jobs.

“The girls were excited about playing the 4A schools,” Bartley said. “They wanted to play the Edmonds-Woodways and the Cascades and all those teams that are the powers to see where we were at. It helped bring them together because they knew they would have to play well every game. It was a fun year.”
