Kim Shin of Mill Creek Country Club has been named the Junior Girls Player of the Year by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.
The award caps a banner year for Shin, a senior at Shorewood High School. She already had been named the Washington Junior Golf Association Player of the Year and in May won the Class 4A state high school championship, edging Renee Skidmore of Cascade in a four-hole playoff in Richland.
Shin also was a Junior America’s Cup qualifier and a Junior World State qualifier.
Cross Country
Brancheau 47th at nationals: Brian Brancheau of Edmonds placed 47th Saturday at the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships in Cary, N.C.
Brancheau, a senior at Western Washington University, covered the six-kilometer course in 32 minutes, 49.1 seconds to help the Vikings place 13th in the men’s team standings.
Celedino Rodriguez of Adams State won the individual title in 30:25.6. Adams State also claimed the team championship.
Martial Arts
Pacific Karate strikes gold: Vienna Krumwiede and Bob Jungers led the Everett-based Pacific Karate Organization to seven medals at the International Victoria Karate Tournament held Nov. 8 in Victoria, B.C.
More than 200 competitors from Washington and British Columbia took part in the event.
Krumwiede, competing in the 8-and-under age division, won gold medals in both kumite (fighting) and kata (forms). Jungers won a gold in kumite and a silver in kata in the masters division.
The other medal winners for Pacific Karate were Killian Karas (silver in kumite in the 8-and-under class), and Tommy MacNaughton (a silver in kata in the 9-13 age division, and a bronze in kumite in the 11-12 division).
Wrestling
Scorpions bring home titles: Eight members of the Stanwood-based Team Scorpion Wrestling Club won their weight classes Saturday at the Folkstyle Challenge in Forks.
The champions included West Weinert (bantam division), Ammon Morrill (midget), Zachary Schut (midget), Wade Weinert (midget), Cameron Wade (novice), Connor Kruse (novice), Micah Morrill (schoolboy) and Trevor Floyd (schoolboy).
A week earlier, the Scorpions competed in the Rhino Folkstyle Open in Seattle. Winning division titles were West Weinert (bantam division), Chris Bartle (novice) and Chris Mather (junior).
