MLB NOTEBOOK

A’S: Oakland’s Mike Sweeney will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday and is expected to miss four to six weeks. The designated hitter and first baseman, who turns 35 next month, will spend a couple of weeks rehabilitating in San Diego with a therapist he’s worked with before. He hopes to be back to doing baseball activities in three or four weeks.

BRAVES: Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones was held out of Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Philadelphia due to a small tear in his right quadriceps, and he said he may miss one or two more games. The Braves are off today and begin a 10-game road trip at Chicago against the Cubs on Tuesday. Jones said he won’t test the injury before Tuesday.

RANGERS: Center fielder Josh Hamilton and shortstop Michael Young were out of Texas’ lineup Sunday against Tampa Bay. Hamilton, who leads the AL in home runs and the majors in RBI, was sidelined because of a viral infection. Young was out of the lineup for the second time in three games, this time because of a sore groin.

BLUE JAYS: Toronto outfielder Shannon Stewart was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle, and outfielder Joe Inglett was recalled from Class AAA Syracuse to take his place on the roster. Brad Wilkerson, who started in left field Sunday, is expected to get the bulk of the playing time in Stewart’s absence.

RAYS: Tampa Bay closer Troy Percival is expected to throw a simulated game today or Tuesday in Anaheim, and could be closing games again by the end of the week. Rays manager Joe Maddon said Percival’s rehab from a pulled left hamstring is on target. Percival has been on the disabled list since May 29, and is eligible to return Friday. The Rays don’t anticipate the right-hander needing a rehabilitation stint in the minors.

Also, Tampa Bay starting pitcher Matt Garza and catcher Dioner Navarro had to be separated after arguing in the dugout during Sunday’s game at Texas. Television cameras caught the pitcher and catcher face-to-face in the dugout and in an apparent scuffle that spilled into the tunnel leading to the clubhouse after the fourth inning.

ROYALS: The Kansas City Royals optioned right-hander Joel Peralta to Class AAA Omaha. The Royals, who used six relievers in a 12-11 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday, called up right-hander Jeff Fulchino from Omaha. Fulchino tossed a scoreless inning in Kansas City’s 6-3 loss to New York on Sunday.

TWINS: Minnesota second baseman Alexi Casilla was scratched from the lineup against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday because of a sore lower back. Recently called up because of injuries in the infield, Casilla has a 10-game hitting streak and is 16-for-40 in that stretch.

TIGERS: The Detroit Tigers recalled left-hander Clay Rapada from Class AAA Toledo, where he was on a rehabilitation assignment, and activated him from the disabled list. Rapada was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 21 with biceps tendinitis.
