Inge out 4-6 weeks with broken hand
DETROIT — Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge left Monday night’s game against Texas after having his left hand broken by a pitch from Scott Feldman in the third inning.
Inge stayed in the game after being examined by Detroit’s training staff, but was replaced in the field by Don Kelly for the top of the fifth.
X-rays showed a non-displaced fracture of his fifth metacarpal. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Nippert hit in head with liner
DETROIT — Texas Rangers right-hander Dustin Nippert left the field under his own power after being hit in the head by line drive off Austin Jackson’s bat in a game against the Detroit Tigers.
The Rangers said Nippert appeared to be OK but he is being taken to a hospital for precautionary X-rays.
Jackson’s drive up the middle Monday night appeared to hit Nippert above the ear and ricocheted into shallow left field for a double. Texas catcher Matt Treanor was already sprinting toward the mound before the ball hit the ground, and was quickly joined by teammates and the Rangers training staff.
Nippert quickly was able to sit up, and after being examined by trainers, he walked off the field. He was replaced by Darren O’Day.

Morneau remains out
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau will likely miss at least another week’s worth of games while he recovers from a concussion. Venters, Cox suspended
NEW YORK — Atlanta Braves pitcher Jonny Venters was suspended for four games and fined by Major League Baseball on Monday for throwing consecutive pitches at Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder last weekend. Baseball’s vice president in charge of discipline, Bob Watson, also said Braves manager Bobby Cox has been suspended for one game. Venters and Cox were ejected for their actions Saturday. Cox’s ejection was his record 156th and third this season. One inning after Fielder’s homer started a five-run inning for the Brewers in a 6-3 win, Venters threw a pitch over his head. Plate umpire Angel Hernandez warned both benches and Venters hit Fielder in the back with the next pitch. Cox earned an automatic ejection when he came out of the dugout to argue.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Padres manager Bud Black was given a three-year contract extension through 2013, with club options for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The Padres, who were off Monday before starting a series at NL East-leading Atlanta on Tuesday, have a four-game lead over the Colorado Rockies. Their 54-37 record is third-best in the big leagues, behind the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.
Rolen has cortisone shot
CINCINNATI — Third baseman Scott Rolen got a cortisone shot in his right hamstring on Monday, leaving the Cincinnati Reds without one of the catalysts for their turnaround season. Manager Dusty Baker said the team will decide in the next couple of days whether to put Rolen on the 15-day disabled list. Rolen missed two games before the All-Star break with a sore back. During a 3-2 win over Colorado on Friday night, he was thrown out at third while tagging on a fly ball in the eighth inning. Rolen felt a burning sensation in his right hamstring while tagging up.
