CHICAGO — The Los Angeles Angels have activated Vladimir Guerrero from the disabled list, and the eight-time All-Star was in the lineup for Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
Guerrero missed the previous 21 games with a strained left calf and a strained lower left hamstring. It was his second stint on the DL; he missed 35 games with a torn chest muscle. He batted .303 with 18 RBI in the 38 games between injuries.
Guerrero was listed as the DH and was batting cleanup.
The Angels went 18-3 with Guerrero and center fielder Torii Hunter on the DL. Hunter, who has adductor and groin injuries, is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday.
Castillo injured in dugout
NEW YORK — Second baseman Luis Castillo left the New York Mets’ game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night with a sprained left ankle after he slipped and fell in the dugout.
Castillo grounded out leading off the seventh and was on his way back to the bench when he tumbled down the dugout steps and had to be helped up the tunnel by some teammates.
Angel Berroa came in to play shortstop in the top of the eighth and Alex Cora moved to second to replace Castillo, who went 1 for 3 and scored a run.
Dodgers’ Hudson out
LOS ANGELES — All-Star second baseman Orlando Hudson has been scratched from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup with an upset stomach.
Hudson, who drove in two runs against Milwaukee on Monday night, was removed from the lineup about 90 minutes before Tuesday’s game against the Brewers.
Hudson has been one of the Dodgers’ most consistent hitters lately, batting .361 (22 for 61) in 16 games since the All-Star break. He had started 101 of Los Angeles’ first 106 games, completely missing just three games all season.
Backup Juan Castro replaced Hudson, who’s batting .292 with seven homers and 53 RBI.
Bay out, Drew back in
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Boston Red Sox left fielder Jason Bay was out of the starting lineup for Tuesday night’s game against Tampa Bay because of a mildly strained right hamstring.
Bay left Saturday’s game at Baltimore in the sixth inning with a cramp in the hamstring. He expects to start in Wednesday’s game.
“Give it one more day, probably the smart thing to do,” Bay said. “It feels a lot better than it did yesterday.”
J.D. Drew, slowed by a groin strain, started in right field. He felt OK after running before the game.
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, out since July 18 with a lower back strain, said he will throw a bullpen session today. While his back has greatly improved, Wakefield said a nerve irritation has caused discomfort in his calf.
