TAMPA, Fla. — A high school jersey once worn by Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and stolen after his death has been returned to the Florida school.
Hillsborough County Public Schools said in a news release Friday that the jersey was returned Thursday.
Officials said a family saw a large envelope leaning up against the ticket booth at Alonso High School with the words “Jose’s jersey” written on it. The family took the envelope into to the school Friday morning. The jersey was inside.
It was taken Wednesday night following a vigil for the 24-year-old, who died over the weekend in a boating accident in Miami Beach.
Fernandez attended Alonso High in Tampa in 2011.
Price to return to Reds
CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds say Bryan Price will return as manager next season.
The last-place team announced the decision before Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
Price and the Reds agreed to a one-year contract with a team option. The entire coaching staff also has been offered contracts for 2017.
The Reds entered Friday’s game at 67-92, 34 1/2 games out of first in the NL Central. This year’s team set a franchise record by using 32 pitchers and a major league record by allowing 253 home runs. The Reds went 32-57 before the All-Star break before improving to 35-35 in the second half.
Price was promoted from pitching coach to manager after the 2013 season and saddled with a rebuilding effort. His overall record is 207-276.
A-Rod starts as instructor
Alex Rodriguez is back on the field for the New York Yankees in his new role as an instructor.
A-Rod arrived Friday at the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa, Florida, to work with prospects in the instructional league.
Rodriguez talked with Clint Frazier, Blake Rutherford and Jorge Mateo after hitting drills on Derek Jeter Field. He also spent time talking with coaches and players during regular batting practice.
Rodriguez wore a No. 13 uniform while in the dugout during Friday’s game against Toronto. He’s is scheduled to meet with the players in the clubhouse before Saturday’s game with Baltimore.
The 41-year-old Rodriguez played his final game with New York in August. He signed a contract to work with minor leaguers in the Yankees farm system through 2017.
Cubs extend GM, exec
CINCINNATI — Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer and scouting and player development director Jason McLeod agreed to contract extensions through the 2021 season Friday, mirroring president of baseball operations Theo Epstein’s deal two days earlier.
The team announced the deals before its game against the Reds.
Hoyer and McLeod joined the franchise on Nov. 1, 2011, and have helped put together a team that has qualified for post-season play in consecutive seasons for just the third time in franchise history. This year’s team went into the final series of the regular season with a major league-best 101-57 record — just the third in team in major league history to win a least 100 games in within four years of a 100-loss season.
