Bruney, K-Rod shout it out
NEW YORK — Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez definitely knows who Brian Bruney is now.
Rodriguez shouted at the New York Yankees reliever during batting practice Sunday and the two were separated by teammates one day after they exchanged pointed jabs through the media.
Bruney, the former Warrenton High School star, called Rodriguez’s exuberant celebrations on the mound a “tired act,” and K-Rod said he didn’t know who the injured right-hander was before advising him to “keep his mouth shut.”
In video footage on the YES Network, an angry Rodriguez could be seen pointing at Bruney from a few feet away before Yankees reliever Jose Veras stepped between them in left field.
“To me, it’s incredible that this is a big story,” Bruney said after the Yankees’ 15-0 victory over the Mets. “They’re a great team and he’s a great player. I’m sure he’s not concerned about what I think.”
Chavez surgery
SAN FRANCISCO — Eric Chavez is headed for another back surgery and won’t return in 2009 for the Oakland Athletics. The six-time Gold Glove third baseman, on the 60-day disabled list with a herniated disk and strained right forearm, is scheduled to have the operation June 23.
Sheffield’s MRI
NEW YORK — Gary Sheffield is going to get an MRI on his sore right knee, giving the depleted New York Mets another injury concern.
Sheffield said it’s been bothering him on and off for a couple of weeks but he decided to play through it with New York dealing with a rash of injuries and a flu bug that swept through the clubhouse.
