MLB NOTES: Cardinals get Boyer from Braves

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals got help for a needy bullpen on Monday, acquiring right-hander Blaine Boyer from the Atlanta Braves for minor league outfielder Brian Barton.

General manager John Mozeliak said the Cardinals would go with 13 pitchers for at least the next few days, and would demote a position player before beginning a three-game series against the Mets on Tuesday. St. Louis relievers have averaged more than four innings the first 13 games.

“I don’t look at it as a Band-Aid at all,” Mozeliak said. “We’re looking to add depth to an area that needed it.”

Twins put Crain on DL

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins have placed reliever Jesse Crain on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder, another setback for their unstable bullpen.

The move was made Monday, retroactive to Saturday, after an MRI test showed inflammation in the joint. Left-hander Jose Mijares will be recalled from Class AAA Rochester before today’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

The team’s medical staff wanted to give Crain a few days of full rest without any throwing, so rather than leave the bullpen short the decision was made to put the right-hander on the DL.

McCann to meet eye doctor

WASHINGTON — Braves catcher Brian McCann is to meet with an eye doctor today about the blurred vision that has kept him out of the starting lineup. He is in a 1-for-20 slump. McCann sat out Atlanta’s game Monday against the Nationals.

Marlins put Miller on DL

PITTSBURGH — Florida Marlins starting pitcher Andrew Miller went on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique injury after giving up four runs and five hits in 42/3 innings during an 8-0 loss in Pittsburgh on Monday night. The Marlins will recall a pitcher today to replace the left-handed Miller (0-1), who has a 6.94 ERA in four games.
