CINCINNATI — The NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds got Jim Edmonds from the Milwaukee Brewers for Chris Dickerson on Monday, strengthening their outfield for a playoff run.
The trade gives the Reds a proven outfielder as they try to fend off St. Louis and reach the playoffs for the first time since 1995. The Reds led the Cardinals by two games heading into their three-game showdown in Cincinnati starting Monday night.
Twins to skip Slowey’s next start
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins plan to skip right-hander Kevin Slowey’s next start because of soreness in his elbow.
Slowey’s bullpen session was canceled Sunday. His next turn to pitch was going to be Wednesday, but the Twins will probably have to bring up a temporary replacement from the minors.
Left-hander Glen Perkins is a possibility. Left-hander Francisco Liriano and right-hander Carl Pavano each requested an extra day to rest their arms this week, taking advantage of the off day Monday.
The Twins start a three-game series in Chicago against the rival White Sox on Tuesday, with first place in the AL Central on the line. Right-hander Scott Baker is scheduled to pitch Tuesday, and Liriano is up Thursday.
Rays put Niemann on DL
DETROIT — The Tampa Bay Rays placed pitcher Jeff Niemann on the 15-day disabled list before Monday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers.
Niemann missed his scheduled start Sunday with a strained right shoulder. Niemann is 10-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 22 starts.
To replace Niemann, the Rays recalled reliever Mike Ekstrom from Triple-A Durham. Ekstrom was scheduled to arrive during Monday’s game.
