Monroe earns top seed in Wesco North

OAK HARBOR — The Monroe girls basketball team earned the Wesco North’s No. 1 seed to the District 1 playoffs with a 60-51 victory over Oak Harbor on Wednesday night.

Monroe (13-3 league, 16-4 overall) tied Marysville-Pilchuck (13-3, 15-5) for first place in Wesco North, but earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of its two victories over the Tomahawks. Oak Harbor dropped to the No. 5 seed, as Arlington jumped to the No. 4 seed with its victory over Snohomish Wednesday night. Oak Harbor plays Wesco South’s Shorewood Friday in a play-in game.

“They (Monroe) took care of the ball,” Oak Harbor head coach Brett McLeod said of Monroe’s three turnovers in the game. “That gave them 64 shots in the game, and they had 17 offensive rebounds. … That was the difference in the game.”

Monroe’s Suzanna Ohlsen and Sammi Clark had 18 points each. Oak Harbor’s Jessica Denmon made five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 31 points.
