Monroe guards too much for Lake Stevens

LAKE STEVENS – Just as they planned, the Lake Stevens Vikings slowed down one of Monroe’s shooting stars.

Problem is, the first-place Bearcats, ranked No. 8 in this week’s Associated Press poll, draw on an entire galaxy.

Lake Stevens held star post Kirsten Thompson to 11 points, but guards Chelsey Zimmerman and Sarah Morton combined for 28 to shoot Monroe to a 57-37 Western Conference North Division girls basketball victory Wednesday night at Lake Stevens High School.

“”They beat us with their guard play” said Lake Stevens head coach Tom Tri, whose team fell to 6-5 in league, 10-5 overall.

Zimmerman scored 15 points and Morton had 13 for Monroe (10-1, 15-1).

Lake Stevens trailed by just five points (20-15) by halftime, but Zimmerman, who made three 3-point field goals in the game, and Morton caught fire. Monroe also played tough defense, Tri said.

“They had great defensive pressure. They took us out of our comfort zone.”

Post Katie Holloway kept Lake Stevens close, scoring 10 of her team’s 15 first-half points. Overall, Holloway grabbed 14 rebounds, including seven on offensive, and scored a game-high 19 points.

Monroe’s Thompson had a team-high nine rebounds and four blocks.

Lake Stevens rallied to get within 10 points with 4 minutes, 20 seconds to go in the fourth quarter but Lake Stevens started fouling and Monroe make nine of 15 free throws in the period to seal the victory.
