Monroe opens with road win at Stanwood

STANWOOD – It was only the first game of the season, but Monroe girls soccer coach Kathleen Potthast said she couldn’t be happier with how her Bearcats kicked off 2004.

Could you blame her?

Junior Chelsey Bumbaugh and sophomore Keena Hopkins had two goals apiece in the first half and Monroe went on to defeat Stanwood 5-0 in a season-opening Western Conference, North Division game.

“We played away, and that’s always tough” Potthast said. “Our team just played a lot of good finesse passing game. Hopefully, they can both keep that up throughout the season.”

At Stanwood

Goals-Monroe: Bumbaugh 2, Hopkins 2, Julian. Goalkeepers-Monroe: Wagner. Stanwood: Aikens, Ludwig. Records-Monroe 1-0 in league and overall. Stanwood 0-1, 0-1.

Cascade 3, Marysville-Pilchuck 1: Kaily Thornlund of Cascade scored two minutes into the second half to tie the Wesco North game at 1-1. Melanie Lienhard added the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute for the Bruins.

At Marysville

Goals-Cascade: Thornlund, Lienhard 2. M-P: Lundberg. Goalkeepers-Cascade: Gegax. M-P: Hartsock. Records-Cascade 1-0 league and overall. M-P 0-1, 0-1.

Lake Stevens 4, Arlington 1: Raeylynne Lee scored two goals for Lake Stevens in its season-opening Wesco North victory. Jesse Heath scored Arlington’s lone marker in the first half.

At Arlington

Goals-LS: Lee 2, Zueger, Welch. Arlington: Heath. Goalkeepers-LS: Osbourn, Arlington: Welk. Records-Lake Stevens 1-0 league and overall. Arlington 0-1, 0-1.

Snohomish 0, Mount Vernon 0: Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey said the Panthers out-shot Mount Vernon 30-3, but couldn’t get one in the nets in the Wesco North opener.

Goalkeepers-Snohomish: Lee. Mount Vernon: not reported. Records-Snohomish 0-0-1 in league and overall. Mount Vernon 0-0-1, 0-0-1.

Edmonds-Woodway 1, Bellingham 1: Bellingham tied the score on Claire Morgan’s goal in the 76th minute. Haley Zevenbergen scored the Warriors’ lone goal.

At Lynnwood

Goals-Bellingham: Morgan. Edmonds-Woodway: Zevebergen. Goalkeepers-Edmonds-Woodway: McKeown and Bradley. Bellingham: Fuller, Murguia. Records-Bellingham 0-0-1 overall. Edmonds-Woodway 0-0-1.

Kamiak 2, Squalicum 0: Midfielder Emily Passovoy scored in the 16th minute and forward Annika Fjortoft added an insurance goal in the second half to boost Kamiak to victory in the non-conference, season-opening game. Freshman Kelli Stewart assisted on Passovoy’s goal.

At Bellingham

Goals-Kamiak: Passovoy, Fjortoft. Goalkeepers-Kamiak: Vordahl. Squalicum: Sandberg. Records-Kamiak 1-0 overall. Squalicum 0-1.

Skyline 2, Jackson 1: Cassie Villnow scored two goals in leading Skyline to the non-conference victory. Villow scored on a penalty kick in the 75th minute. Farrah Ragsdale scored Jackson’s lone goal.

Mountlake Terrace 5, Anacortes 1: Mountlake Terrace’s Stephanie Callfas got things rolling in the fourth minute with the first of Terrace’s five goals in the non-conference game.
