Monroe posts one-goal victory

MONROE – Monroe had the answer.

Moments after Stanwood tied the score, Keena Hopkins scored her second goal and the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute, to capture a 2-1 victory over the Spartans in a Western Conference North Division girls soccer game at Monroe Stadium Tuesday night.

“It was a great back-and-forth battle between two good teams,” Monroe coach Kathleen Potthast said.

Hopkins’ goal came off a passed ball on the ground by Chelsea Bumbaugh, who has verbally committed to the University of Washington. Hopkins’ original shot caromed off the Stanwood goalkeeper back to Hopkins’ feet and she put it into the back of the net.

Stanwood’s Monique Thees tied the score 1-1 in the 72nd minute with a 25-yard shot into the upper-left side of the net over the outstretched arms of Monroe’s goalkeeper Kayla Wangner.

After a scoreless first half, Sarah Elledge crossed the ball from the right side of the field to the foot of Hopkins, who tallied her first goal in the 68th minute.

Monroe travels to play Mount Vernon (a 2-1 loss on Tuesday to Snohomish) on Thursday at Mount Vernon High School at 7 p.m.
