MONROE — After fending off every team this season, Snohomish finally met its match on Thursday night. The young but strong Monroe team defeated the Panthers 2-1, clinching the No. 3 playoff seed and home field advantage in Monday’s 4A District 1 Soccer Tournament.
Monroe head coach Kathleen Potthast acknowledged that her team has been playing better in the second half of the season, including winning three of the last four games. She thought they had a chance to beat Snohomish, a team to whom they lost 3-0 on Sept. 27.
“Snohomish is a really good team,” Potthast said. “Whenever we play (them), it’s always a battle.”
Snohomish’s Carly McBride scored first off of an assist by Kirstie Perron in the fourth minute. A minute later, Monroe tied the score when Jenna Herman headed the ball into the goal. Kaitlynn Chesemore, assisted by Alyssa Drew, sealed the victory for the Bearcats with a goal in the 51st minute.
“It was a team effort by everyone,” said Potthast, emphasizing that the team was “fired up” to win the game due to the home field advantage that was on the line. Monroe’s win means it will play at home against Edmonds-Woodway on Monday. It will have to win three playoff games to make it to the state tournament. Snohomish had already clinched first place in Wesco North and will be at state.
